John Cena says Fast & Furious 9 will answer franchise questions

F9, Fast & Furious 9, John Cena

It may have taken nine installments of the FAST & FURIOUS franchise, but we'll finally learn how they got off the island. I think we all know by now that the franchise is more about physics defying stunts and repeated grumblings of family than any shocking mysteries, but John Cena recently told Jimmy Fallon that the upcoming F9 will be answering a few franchise questions, all while providing new questions to ponder.

Everybody knows Fast is going to kill it when it comes to action. The thing I love about Fast 9 is people are going to see it weave that legacy together. It's not nearly 'What is Fast gonna do next for action;' it is action on the edge of your seat, but story. If you're a fan of the franchise, you get questions answered, you get new questions you can develop, it's another foothold to the narrative. That's the stuff that I love.

When it comes to questions looming over the FAST & FURIOUS franchise, I suppose the biggest one is just how Han Lau (Sung Kang) survived his death at the hands of Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) and just what the hell he's been up to all this time. As the character is slated to return for F9, looking no worse for wear I might add, I would gather that's one question we'll soon have answered. I say soon, but the release of the film was recently pushed back when NO TIME TO DIE moved into its former slot. F9 will find Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) being confronting the sins of his past when his team goes up against the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they've ever encountered: Dom's forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena). Justin Lin returns to the director's chair once again for an action blockbuster that will take the team from London to Tokya, from Central America to Edinburgh, and from a secret bunker in Azerbaijan to the teeming streets of Tblisi. In addition to Diesel and Cena, F9 will also star Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, and Charlize Theron.

The official synopsis for F9:

Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena).

F9 will hit theaters on May 28, 2021.
