When The Fast and the Furious premiered twenty years ago, I doubt that many people would have expected the franchise to grow as massive and as outrageous as it has, but over the years, the series has become all the more willing to toss the laws of physics out the window in favour of pure entertainment, and it seems that the latest film is no exception.
The first reactions to F9 have been released and they're pretty much what I was expecting, painting the film as ridiculously over-the-top action mayhem; whether that's a good thing or not is up to you, but here's an assortment of reactions for your reading pleasure.
#F9 is outrageous & one of the biggest, baddest additions to the Fast family franchise. Anything is possible, there are surprises at every turn, the stunts are at their best, & Tyrese steals the whole god damn show. Everything is over-the-top & I loved every second of it. pic.twitter.com/NVzoCbnovy

Watched #F9 last night in a movie theater in Los Angeles. Hearing other people laugh around me when some ridiculously over the top action happened was the best part. Thank you science.
And don’t worry, the trailers haven’t spoiled the movie. Fans will have so much fun watching. pic.twitter.com/kRQCeZEk8G

#F9 had me smiling like a straight man at a sportball gathering.
It's all wink wink, nudge nudge, vroom vroom and I loved. The over-the-top set pieces you want + some old-school F1-2 vibes.
As for #JusticeForHan? There will be takes. But Tokyo Drift heads are in for a treat. pic.twitter.com/aPtTgnDJxF

#F9 is a wild ride. It’s now been hours since seeing it and I found myself giggling at the sheer audacity of a few of the big set pieces and some other stuff. It’ll absolutely make you forget your troubles for a few hours.

I've seen #F9 and can say it's a TON OF FUN!! The action feels fresh & innovative, if not necessarily bigger. It weaves in John Cena's Jakob in a smart way that builds on the theme of family, giving it some real heart. This is ultimate Fast & Furious.
also HAN IS STILL GREAT!!! pic.twitter.com/SfLCBKsypR

F9 is ~by far~ the biggest & most ridiculous Fast & Furious yet.
miles from the precision of Fast Five or the fun of Tokyo Drift, but with Justin Lin at the helm it feels like things are finally moving in the right direction. #JusticeForHan

They totally made the right decision to wait and let us see it together in a theater, because as we know, the exceptional driving and FX need to be enjoyed as big as humanly possible. Plus hearing us all laughing at the audacity filled me with glee. Vroom vroom went my heart.

The envelope is open, and I can now say that #F9 was AMAZING! Justin Lin's return is a high ranking entry, w/ satisfying answers to some important ?'s. The action continues to be pure bonkers adrenaline & the story actually gets some exciting depths. Absolute blockbuster bliss. pic.twitter.com/m5I3xyma7e

I saw #F9 , the 9th Fast & Furious film. While I believe many will enjoy this, I did not whatsoever. It’s overly long, convoluted, and so ridiculously over the top that it borders on being insulting rather than fun & entertaining. This franchise has officially run out of gas. pic.twitter.com/q6XLP9NYKG

My F9 reaction: The Fast movies 4-8 work well because they embrace the ridiculousness. But at some point it's way too much. The couple of moments to of laughs and charm are totally overwhelmed by the eye rolling nonsense. It's the worst FF movie to date.

#F9 gets busy (too busy), as it pits #VinDiesel against #JohnCena, and, in its outer-space sequence, flirts with jumping the shark. My @Variety review. https://t.co/9xuGmgmI0J

As someone who unabashedly enjoys over-the-top actions movies, I can safely say that I will have an absolute ball with F9 when I'm able to see it, but if you're not already on board the Fast & Furious train, it doesn't sound like the latest sequel will win you over.
The official synopsis for F9:
Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena).
F9 will hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
