Even when his movies don’t quite live up to expectations, Spider-Man has never had trouble making big bucks at the box office, and the web head’s latest adventure – SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME – has wasted no time becoming his most lucrative one yet. After being in theaters for 20 days, the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Sony and Marvel Studios has surpassed all the others in the character’s canon by making a whopping $970 million (via Box Office Mojo), becoming the biggest Spider-Man movie to date and will be the first to cross $1 billion at the global box office.

The incredible sum puts FAR FROM HOME almost $100 million above the $890 million total of the prior highest grosser, SPIDER-MAN 3 (ironic given it’s considered the worst entry), which itself is only a tad above the $880 million total of SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING. Not only is the character as popular as ever, but the movie also benefitted from coming off the gargantuan success of AVENGERS: ENDGAME – which recently became the biggest movie of all time – and from earning rave reviews as one of the best Spidey entries yet.
Audiences flocked to the theaters to see how things picked up after the events of ENDGAME, as FAR FROM HOME finds Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man having the mantle of “the new Iron Man” thrust upon him, struggling to handle the pressure. While on vacation in Europe he must come face-to-face with a new threat, and with the help of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) must learn to be the hero the world needs after the loss of his mentor. The movie will cross the $1 billion mark by the end of the week, and of the six most recent movies of the MCU (including BLACK PANTHER, INFINITY WAR, ANT-MAN & THE WASP, CAPTAIN MARVEL and ENDGAME), it will be the fifth movie to hit the milestone.

As I said, Spider-Man has never had that much trouble making money around the world, but the fact the movie has made this much money is a testament to the enduring popularity of the character, the quality of the new movies, and the power of the MCU. People flocked to theaters to see how the story continued after the epic outing, and while it didn't quite tease the future of the massive series, FFH did mark the end of Marvel's Phase 3 and featured a mid-credits scene that left Spidey hanging on one hell of a final note.
