Earlier this week we reported that SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME was already the highest-grossing movie in the Spider-Man series, and by the end of the week the movie would cross $1 billion around the world. Well, seems like “by the end of the week” wasn’t going to cut it for the webhead, and as of yesterday the movie has crossed the coveted threshold and has joined the $1 billion club alongside fellow superheroes like Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Batman, Black Panther and, while still funny to think about, Aquaman.

While the exact number is not up, Deadline is reporting from box office source that the movie is expected to have made $1.005 billion with Thursday business, making it the first solo movie starring the character to make that much. It also makes it the second movie from Sony to pass $1 billion after SKYFALL made $1.1 billion all the way back in 2012 – though JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE was close with $962 million.
Leading into FFH’s impressive run was a combination of excellent reviews and word of mouth, as well as being the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after AVENGERS: ENDGAME, which is now the biggest movie ever. Along with ENDGAME and CAPTAIN MARVEL (both Disney-Marvel movies), FAR FROM HOME is the third movie to cross $1 billion this year, with another Disney movie, ALADDIN, also close to the mark with $991 million. THE LION KING is expected to leap over the total soon after making $713 million after only one week of release (two weeks in China), which is a bit insane.

In terms of FFH’s domestic run, the estimates have it at about $333 million through Thursday, meaning that today it will pass both the totals of SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING ($334 million) and SPIDER-MAN 3 ($336 million) to become the third highest-grossing movie in the series domestically. Should it continue to bring in audiences despite the release of HOBBS & SHAW next week, it might have a shot at besting SPIDER-MAN 2’s $373 million, but the odds of it topping the first SPIDER-MAN’s $403 million are slim.
Movies starring Spider-Man have always been pretty reliable for Sony, never hitting the incredible lows of other tentpole movies like SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY and this year's DARK PHOENIX. Even though the failure of humankind is represented in SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE's $375 million total (we could've done better!), that is still not bad considering it's a very unique animated movie with no major links to the other Spider-Man movies. While we have no clue when the third MCU Spider-Man movie will arrive, it's safe to say Spidey is more popular than ever at the movies, and hopefully, they won't make us wait much longer now that he's a billion-dollar player.
