The Fantastic Four is set to join the MCU in their very own film and, at one point, Spider-Man’s Jon Watts was on deck to helm their arrival. Following working on three insanely successful Spider-Man films and developing even more projects of his own, Watts stepped down from the Fantastic Four movie to avoid burning out which means that the director’s chair on the project is open once again. Have there been any names in the running to replace Watts? According to reports from Deadline’s Justin Kroll, it looks like Marvel boss Kevin Feige is looking for big names to take on the job so he can be more hands-off on the project.
Kroll released a series of tweets updating us on where Fantastic Four stands on its search for a new director. If you’re hoping for a choice to be made soon, you may end up being disappointed. Fantastic Four is a top priority for Marvel but Kroll said one source says, in regards to directing honors, “don’t expect it to be filled anytime soon as they are not even close to cutting down a long list of candidates, I’d be shocked if a choice is made before labor day.”
Kroll goes on to say that no specific names have surfaced but Feige and Marvel are taking shots at big names because, as one source puts it, “Kevin doesn’t want to oversee entire shoot and after not having worry about that Raimi, he is very game to same outcome with this shoot.” Raimi is, of course, director Sam Raimi, who helmed the recently released Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which has proven to be very successful at the box office.
I do like that they’re taking their time choosing a replacement wisely. Marvel’s greatest strength has always been its patience and its desire to not rush its projects. There is time to make a wise choice to bring Marvel’s First Family into the MCU but I’m intrigued as to who might be on that list of big names to make this happen.
Who do YOU want to see direct Fantastic Four?
