I have become death. The destroyer of worlds. GODZILLA and KING KONG. When it comes to giant monster movie cinema, these two titans may be the first to enter your mind. In 1933, the eighth wonder of the world known as King Kong exploded onto the scene and became an instant pop culture phenomenon. With state-of-the-art stop-motion special effects from Willis O’Brien, King Kong and cinema were forever intertwined. To this day, audiences are still in awe over those dazzling special effects and have a fondness for that giant ape. Although Kong has been remade and reimagined for the better part of a century, the 1933 classic still towers over the Empire State.
On the other side of the world across the pacific, a nuclear terror was born off the coast of Japan — Godzilla. Even though the King of the Monsters’ original film was released in 1954, he wouldn’t become a household name until 1956’s localized American version. With the production pioneering Tokusatsu Suit-mation, Godzilla has easily become the most recognizable Kaiju around the globe. For decades on end, Godzilla has been depicted as a threat to his homeland of Japan, as well as a savior and antihero. This behemoth has battled countless monsters, but in 1962, these colossal cornerstones of cinema clashed on the big screen with Kong eventually conquering Godzilla. Fast forward nearly 60 years later and we were treated with a worthy rematch, which saw Godzilla as the victor this time.
However, here at JoBlo, we wanna dig a little deeper into these killer Kaijus to determine which reigns supreme over cinema and deserves the Face-Off championship title. Once again, it’s King versus God! So activate the siren and head for the closest bomb shelter cause you know what time it is! It’s time for a giant monster FACE OFF!
This episode of Face Off is written by Jay Saint G, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, and edited by Jay Saint G. Let us know in the comments which titan you prefer — Godzilla or King Kong!
