When Guardians of the Galaxy exploded onto screens back in 2014, it was met with universal praise and gave Vin Diesel what was surely the easiest and one of the most lucrative paychecks of his career in the form of Groot. The team was led by Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill, Star-Lord, Zoe Saldaña’s Gamora, Dave Bautista’s Drax, and Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon. With the massive box office haul and widespread acclaim, a sequel was naturally a foregone conclusion.
The followup, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, was released in 2017 to a more divisive reception but contained enough humor, emotion, wit, action, a belting soundtrack, and Kurt Russell to be a worthy successor to the MCU original for many fans. The best part about the Guardians franchise is simply riding around with the ragtag, flawed heroes of The Benatar and seeing what kind of crazy adventure ensues, and boy do both of these movies deliver on the crazy.
Production on Volume 3 has been delayed with James Gunn’s firing and subsequent rehiring on the project so we’ll have to wait until next year to see this bunch of a-holes again on the big screen in likely their final adventure… at least with this roster.
However, thanks to the wonders of streaming, you can get your Guardians fix via the I Am Groot shorts on Disney+ and a holiday special that promises to bring back all of our lovable antiheroes. It’s a great time to be a superhero fan, and the further misadventures of the Guardians of the Galaxy are tantalizing. However, which of the first two installments is as deadly as Yondu’s Yaka arrow, and which one should be made to live on a deserted planet with Taserface? There’s only one way to find out… FACE OFF!
This episode of Face Off is written by Adam Walton, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, and edited by Adam Walton. But don’t let us have the final word — tell us in the comments which Guardians flick is your pick! Guardians of the Galaxy or Volume 2? As always, thanks for watching!
