Ezra Miller finds Dumbledore’s sexuality “extremely explicit” in Beasts 2

At the beginning of 2018 FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD director David Yates said the movie would “not explicitly” address Dumbledore’s sexuality in the movie, resulting in people on the internet losing their minds. Now as we approach the movie’s release next month actor Ezra Miller opened up about Dumbledore’s (Jude Law) love for Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), and how he believes the movie clearly addresses the nature of their relationship.

The actor was speaking with Total Film about the movie and he began to talk about how he found Dumbledore’s sexuality “extremely explicit” in the movie, and that there’s a scene (we get a glimpse of it in the trailer) that proves how directly the movie addresses it.

“It’s a funny idea to me that every form of representation has to look the same. For me, personally, I find Dumbledore’s queerness extremely explicit in this film. I mean, all around. He sees Grindelwald, his young lover who’s the love of his life; he sees him in the Mirror of Erised. What does the Mirror of Erised show you? Nothing more than the most desperate desire of your heart. If that’s not explicitly gay, I don’t know what is.”

“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling revealed that Dumbledore was gay back in 2007 after she had written the final book, and Miller believes she still deserves to be championed for the move.

“People have to also take a moment and acknowledge the gift that Jo Rowling gave us. [She wrote] one of the greatest characters in literary history, one of the most beloved characters across the whole spectrum of civil society…and then, at the end of writing that series, was like, ‘Oh, yeah, and he’s gay. What? Step to me.’ She is forever a god for that.”

As for everyone who was upset with Yates’ words at the start of the year (so much so that some have virtually renounced the series) Miller believes they should do one very simple thing: Watch the movie for themselves before going crazy on social media. 

“Why don’t you wait until you see the film before you start talking shit on Twitter? Or wait to make up your own mind about something for once in your life. Do your own research. Make up your own mind. Follow your heart, and really, really investigate situations before you identify yourself and pick a side, and start throwing things at the opposition. Because that’s what’s totally screwing everything up right now. And it polarizes us. We’re all human, and there’s a lot of things we can agree on.”

Some time ago Law even commented on the matter, saying that he spoke with Rowling about Dumbledore’s relationship with Grindelwald. He wanted to remind everyone this was merely part two of a five-part series, and that their relationship will develop over the course of these new movies. “You’re just getting to know Albus in this film, and there’s obviously a lot more to come,” he said.

FANTASTIC BEASTS: THE CRIMES OF GRINDELWALD hits theaters November 16.
