There have been two films this year that have been an absolute emotional punch to the gut, and I mean that as a huge compliment. First I was completely in awe of MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, and now, that same filmmaker brings us LOVING. Jeff Nichols latest is one of the best films of the year. It is a beautiful love story about the pure and dedicated bond two people have together in a very turbulent time. Starring Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton, this is a sensational story about the real life couple, Richard and Mildred Loving, who fought back against racism with hope and love.
We recently had the opportunity to speak with Jeff about his latest. The writer/director discussed taking on a true story, one that is as quietly powerful as this. This incredible filmmaker discussed the power of what Richard and Mildred Loving went through, and how the story affected him personally. He opened up about his own grandfather and how he reminded him of Richard, and the heartbreak of how it could have been if his own family been trapped in a situation like this. He also discussed what attracts him to a project, including the upcoming ALIEN NATION.
When it came to his actors, the chemistry between both Negga and Edgerton is phenomenal. We spoke to both about bringing that to the film, and creating a realistic love story. The secret, both Ruth and Joel truly like each other. Negga also helped convince me to seek out the documentary THE LOVING STORY. Not surprisingly, the talented Edgerton gives a quiet strength to RIchard and Negga is a revalation as Mildred. The actess is stunning in this Academy Award worthy performance. As well, you have to give credit to the lovely Terri Abney who plays Mildred's concerned sister. The actress is terrific here, and she opened up about working with Jeff as a director, and the amazing gift of working with a giving actress like Ms. Negga.
LOVING opens on November 4th. This one is well worth seeking out.
