In part two of our interview with Boaz Yakin – the director of this week’s release SAFE – we talk about something very near and dear to my own heart. From Akira Kurosawa’s KAGEMUSHA to Sam Peckinpah’s STRAW DOGS all the way back to TARZAN with Johnny Weissmuller, the writer/director discusses some of his influences when it comes to cinema. At a time when people cringe at the thought of a black and white movie, Boaz speaks fondly of some of these classic films.
After our discussion on film, we move into another area that he knows a little something about – and that would be graphic novels. He tells us about two of which he has been working on including “Marathon” – coming out this June – and a personal tale he is bringing to life called “Jerusalem.” Boaz Yakin is a very intelligent, fascinating filmmaker. He is remarkably considerate and an absolute pleasure to Talk ‘n Shop – or is that eat – with. And thanks to his talent, he has made one of my personal favorite Jason Statham movies as of late with SAFE.

“ New York of the Seventies was both a New York that I lived in and a New York that I saw in film.”
