In the somber zombie drama MAGGIE (I hesitate to call it a horror movie, because it really isn't at all), Arnold Schwarzenegger gives – as advertised – a performance unlike he's ever given before. Playing a father who must agonizingly watch as his daughter (Abigail Breslin) is slowly overtaken by a deadly disease… one that will eventually turn her into a zombie. Schwarzenegger's first real dramatic turn is simple, sad and heartfelt; of course, you can't ever forget that you're watching Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the one-time action star and Governor shows a hitherto unseen depth and complexion that is certain to surprise his fans. (And perhaps those who weren't fans to begin with.)
Receiving the opportunity to chat with Schwarzenegger was one of the most thrilling I've ever been afforded while working this beat. I could sugarcoat it, but it comes down to this: It's Arnold f*cking Schwarzenegger. He was paired with Joely Richardson, the lovely actress who plays his second wife in the film, and we proceeded to talk about his preparation for the role, forming a family on set, getting an opportunity to play it straight, and more!
