One of Tim Burton‘s absolute best films is ED WOOD starring Johnny Depp, Sarah Jessica Parker, Patricia Arquette, Bill Murray, and Martin Landau (in one of his finest performances as Bela Legosi). Based on the life of infamous director Edward Wood Jr. who directed some of the worst films ever made, including PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE and GLEN or GLENDA, Burton’s biopic on the crossdressing filmmaker is hilarious, sad, and uplifting all at once, standing as one of the most original flicks of the genre. Burton painstakingly recreated a number of scenes from some of Ed Wood’s films, so much so that we felt a scene vs. scene comparison was in order, just to compare/contrast how ridiculously meticulous he got. It’s always cool to see someone recreate history and in this sense, recreating an actual film within a film.
Watch as Burton recreates these scenes with his actors right down to the marks, movements, and subtle character tics. It had to be hell making it all happen, but when you look at it side by side it’s really cool to see how far he went to make it as realistic (and oftentimes hysterical) as possible.
