Exclusive: A street-smart student becomes the Ecstasy queen in MDMA trailer

Adjusting to a new school and a new way of life can be challenging, but most students would perhaps join a club or start doing yoga or something. But not Angie Wang, a smart student who made a name for herself by cooking up and distributing Ecstasy, becoming one of the biggest players on the scene. We have an exclusive trailer for the autobiographical drama MDMA which recounts this turbulent story, written and directed by Wang herself.

Fleshing out the cast are Annie Q. (THE LEFTOVERS), Francesca Eastwood (MRS. Here is the full plot synopsis:

Raised by her strict father in an urban neighborhood, Angie Wang (Annie Q.) is accepted into a prestigious university in the early 1980s. The sudden jolt from hardship to privileged campus life proves to be a challenge. When her financial aid is cut, she uses her book and street smarts, along with the school resources to synthesize the growing popular drug, Ecstasy. Angie becomes one of the west coast's largest distributors of 'X," cutting deals on campus and in posh nightclubs. Her dual life as the Asian 'model minority' coed and profit-driven drug dealer is further complicated by her desire to help Bree, a girl from one of the bay area's most infamous ghettos who reminds her of her own dark past. Angie lives the high life until her recklessness instigates a sudden tragedy from which she may not recover.

 

Written and directed by Angie Wang (pronounced “Wong”), MDMAis an autobiographical period drama that offers the unique perspective of a working-class, Asian-American woman scrambling for status in a world of white, west-coast privileged. It’s produced by Wang and Rick Bosner (Fruitvale Station, The Wannabe) with Cassian Elwes (Dallas Buyers Club) and Lawrence Braitman serving as executive producers. Brett Pawlak (Short Term 12,Hellion) is the cinematographer. Rodrigo Cabral (The Human Centipede III) is the production designer with costumes designed by one-time Project Runway contestant Kit Scarbo, who went on to serve as a costumer for Dancing with the Stars.

MDMA is in theaters September 14.
