On May 17th, Baba Yaga is back. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 3 – PARABELLUM rejoins us with the beleagured – but still unstoppable – Mr. Wick, now on the run from enemies and friends alike after breaking the sacred rule of the High Table. Naturally, no matter how many assassins attempt to halt his progress, John Wick doesn't go down without a fight, and at least this time he'll have a little help from unlikely sources.
I recently sat down with the main cast and director of JOHN WICK CHAPTER 3 to talk all things bullets, fisticuffs, killers and comrades. This is the most badass group of people I've talked to in a long while.
First up is the man himself: Keanu Reeves, returning for a third – and possibly last? – go-round as the coolest assassin who ever lived. Reeves once again throws himself entirely into the incredibly physical role – and world – of JOHN WICK, and we spoke how the part has evolved over the span of three film, the perils of riding a horse while fleeing villains, and whether or not we'll see more JOHN WICK in the future.
Halle Berry is the highest-profile new addition to the JOHN WICK franchise, playing a longtime cohort of Wick's named Sofia, who may be one of the only "friends" Wick has left after the events of Chapter 2. That doesn't mean she's happy to see the man. Joining Berry for the interview was director Chad Stahelski, who has helmed all three Wick films, and we spoke about the film's appeal for Berry and planning and shooting one of the film's most epic action sequences. (Yes, Berry was under the weather on this particular day, but she's a trooper and battled through!)
Standing outside and preparing for this particular interview, I thought: This is probably the coolest room I'll ever walk into. As an unabashed fan of both Ian McShane and Lance Reddick, I was thoroughly pumped to talk to the two actors who inhabit a couple of the most intriguing characters in the JOHN WICK series. We spoke about McShane's Winston and Reddick's Charon, McShane's "cut" fight sequence, and whether or not they'll be returning for further tales.
Finally, we have two new faces to the WICK story. Acting as the primary antagonists in JOHN WICK 3 are Asia Kate Dillon's The Adjudicator and Mark Dacascos' Zero; the former is a high-ranking member of the High Table who decides Wick's fate, while the latter is a deadly assassin with an unusual interest in Wick. In real life, the pair couldn't be nicer, and we spoke about the pressures of bringing two new figures to the franchise, the quirks and layers of each character and shooting one of fight scenes for an entire month.
