I’ll never forget getting my first glimpse of the Paramount Network TV series Yellowstone. Not only was it exciting to see Kevin Costner headline a small screen episodic television show, but the incredible cast supporting him helped make me a fan. And now, the Dutton family has returned, and it appears that they have a whole lot of new problems for the second season. The series, created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, is a massive production featuring an impressive cast and smart dialogue, with a stunning Montana landscape for a backdrop. This talented cast includes Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Houser, Kelsey Asbille, Gil Birmingham and new to season two, the great Neal McDonough. And thankfully, we had the chance to return to talk with this excellent group about what’s in store.
First up, we sat down with Kevin Costner. This accomplished actor discussed what it was about John Dutton that kept the series interesting for him. He also opened up about whether he saw Dutton as a good guy or one of the bad ones. Not surprisngly, he gave a thoughtful and interesting take on it. It’s always terrific to speak with Mr. Costner. He always gives concise and serious answers, but it’s especially clear when he is talking about a project he’s proud of. And clearly, Yellowstone is one of them. And headlining a series rooted in such themes as broken families and the struggle to retain power feels pretty epic under the Montana skies.
The heart of the series lies with both Kelsey Asbille and Luke Grimes, and this season is proving to be challenging for both Kayce and Monica Dutton. I absolutely love chatting with both Luke and Kelsey. The two are about a nice as they could possibly be, and they clearly are having a great time taking on this material. And frankly, judging from the first episode of the season, the two will have a few more battles to conquer. As a fan of the show I hope to see their relationship continue into another season, but I’d love for that to happen just to have the opportunity to chat with these two together again.
Speaking of complicated relationships, Kelly Reilly and Cole Houser share an especially complex one on-screen. And frankly, the two have wonderful chemistry sitting in a room doing interviews as well. Kelly, who is ferociously tough as Beth Dutton, is a powerhouse on the series. Which makes for an intriguing love story between her and Rip Wheeler. The two discussed where things may be heading and how working together in Montana helps create a family environment on set for the entire cast.
And finally, we spoke with Gil Birmingham, Wes Bentley and Neal McDonough, who joins this cast as a bit of a villain this season. The three discussed returning for a second season, and McDonough gave us a hint of what to expect from his character – one that we didn’t really get to see in action before the interview. However, it was wonderful to speak to all three of these delightful and nice guys, and it’s always a pleasure talking to Mr. Bentley. The actor is especially kind and sincere. And you can see all of them together, starting today on the Paramount Network. Get ready for another wild ride as Yellowstone returns tonight for the beginning of season 2.
