Exclusive: James Gunn, Elizabeth Banks and more talk Brightburn!

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

When you see James Gunn attached to a horror film, it offers a ton of promise. Add to that a bit of superhero mythology, and you have something intense and gruesome like BRIGHTBURN. In the new film produced by Gunn – written by Brian and Mark Gunn – director David Yarovesky takes the horror to a nasty level. And frankly, this one kind of f*cked me up. So much so that it had to sit with me a bit. It’s bloody, twisted, and features an excellent cast including the incredible talent of Elizabeth Banks, David Denman and young Jackson A. Dunn. Imagine if Superman were a psychotic monster sent to do harm… well that should give you an idea of what BRIGHTBURN is.

We recently sat down with the fine folks behind this ghoulish tale. And as usual, it was fantastic to chat with the amazingly badass James Gunn and Elizabeth Banks. I asked Mr. Gunn about the genesis of the creepy kid, and how they approached his evil desires. As well, Elizabeth – who is sensational as a mother dealing with impossible odds – discussed her own connection to the role, and how she never thought about approaching this character as she would a typical genre flick.

Next up we spoke to both David Denman and Jackson A. Dunn. David talked about playing a dad with a really troublesome child. And as for Jackson, the actor opened up about playing a very dark and frightening character. As well, the two chatted about their own connection to Superman and the less gory tales of a mythical man with superhuman strength.

And finally, we took some time to talk to David Yarovesky. While the filmmaker hasn’t had too many feature films under his belt, he does a terrific job of making the audience squirm as this little child creates a bit of grotesque havoc in this superhero horror flick. He discussed his own take on the character, and working with James to create a horrific work of fantasy that is grounded enough to take the audience on a bit of a nightmarish vision – especially for parents.

BRIGHTBURN opens tonight in previews and tomorrow wide. Get ready for a disturbingly gruesome take on the superhero mythology.
