Hell, yeah! Tonight we just got word that none other than Ewan McGregor has been cast as adult Danny Torrance in Warner Bros' upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's DOCTOR SLEEP. The novel which is famously known as the sequel to King's (debatable) masterpiece THE SHINING.
King has given his blessing to McGregor’s casting.
The much-anticipated follow-up to Stanly Kubrick's classic, which starred Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall – along with Danny Lloyd as young Danny Torrance – will be directed by Mike Flanagan (HUSH, GERALD'S GAME, OCULUS, BEFORE I WAKE). Flanagan's go-to producing partner Trevor Macy will produce along with Vertigo Entertainment’s Jon Berg.
DOCTOR SLEEP begins as
Torrance carries the trauma of the Overlook Hotel into adulthood. He’s become a reflection of his murderous father, with lingering rage and a drinking problem that dulls his pain as well as his “shining” powers. Those powers return when he embraces sobriety and uses his gift to help the dying at a hospice. He establishes a psychic connection with a young girl who shares his extreme abilities, and who is being targeted by a group with similar abilities. They’ve found that their powers grow if they inhale the “steam” that comes off others with the power to shine when they are suffering painful deaths.
I don't know about you, but I think this is great casting. Not only is McGregor a fantastic actor, but the man lends such a prestige to any film that he chooses to grace with his presence. And forgive me for getting ahead of myself here, but maybe this upcoming horror movie will have a shot at some Oscar gold come its given award season? We'll see! Are you excited for McGregor's casting? Let us know below! The studio has scheduled DOCTOR SLEEP for release on January 24, 2020.
