It should come as no surpise that there is already talks of a sequel to the Fede Alvarez-directed remake of EVIL DEAD, especially when you consider the overwhelmingly positive response the film received at this weekends SXSW premiere of the gore-laden flick. Couple that with the guaranteed box office bank the film will undoubtably rake in, it’s pretty much a no-brainer that the studio would demand a sequel.
During a QandA session following EVIL DEAD’s SXSW screening, Alvarez addressed the crowd stating that he has already begun work on a screenplay for a sequel, demonstrating the producers and the studios faith that they have a hit on their hands. While it hasn’t been set in stone as of yet, this is as close to an “official” announcement on the sequel as we can expect until the TriStar/Film District remake hits theaters on April 5.
Switching gears to other EVIL DEAD releated goodness, Ghost House Pictures producing partner Rob Tapert clarified earlier reports on the EVIL DEAD 4 rumors that have been running rampant on the internet, stating that the producers (and series creator/director Sam Raimi) were never talking about doing an Evil Dead 4 but actually doing a direct sequel to ARMY OF DARKNESS. In his own words:
“That would be Army of Darkness 2. Everybody calls it Evil Dead 4 but Army of Darkness wasn’t called Evil Dead anywhere except by the fans.”
Except that isn’t entirely true. The films original working title was EVIL DEAD 3 and the flick has been released in several territories under that title. But hey, we’ll just go with what the man says. EVIL DEAD 4. ARMY OF DARKNESS 2. I don’t care what they call it, just as long as they make it happen!
We’ll keep you updated on the status of both films as we hear it.
