Remember about a week ago when Joss Whedon shook up the Internet and announced that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver would be the newest heroes to appear in THE AVENGERS 2? Yeah, it seems that Bryan Singer and Fox didn’t get the memo because Singer just tweeted this out to the world:
Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.

So, either we have a competition between 20th Century Fox and Disney to see who has the rights to these characters, or something bigger is coming. Fox has the rights to all characters who fall under the mutant category for their X-MEN films. As we have seen over the years, this has caused some creative thinking between the studios to make sure they don’t step on each others toes. But, this is the first time I can recall something like this happening. If Fox invokes the rights to use Quicksilver, will Whedon fold and change his plans for THE AVENGERS 2? Or, can two different actors play variations of the same character in both THE AVENGERS and X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST? Or, could it be our dream scenario: could Disney and Fox have found a way to bridge their cinematic universes?
Before we all blow our collectives loads over that possibility, lets focus on the casting itself. Peters has made himself known to the world playing two totally different characters on the first two seasons of AMERICAN HORROR STORY. In both, he showed an incredible range at playing both bad and good, a vital characteristic to make Quicksilver work. I like this casting as it is both under the radar and has the potential for great success.
Considering the character is tied directly to Magneto and therefore falls under X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST in terms of scope, Quicksilver is vital to several storylines in THE AVENGERS. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST opens July 18, 2014 and THE AVENGERS 2 opens May 1, 2015.
