Eternals writers want to make a prequel series for Disney+

Eternals is now playing in theaters, and although the reaction isn’t exactly what Marvel had hoped, there’s no denying that the movie has shaken up the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a big way. With a history spanning thousands of years, there’s plenty of stories featuring the Eternals yet to be told, and that’s something writers Ryan and Kaz Firpo would like to have the opportunity to do. While speaking with THR, the Firpo’s said that an Eternals prequel series for Disney+ is something they’ve considered.

Go back and do a Kingo episode in 1890s Mumbai where he is juggling his life as a movie star, dealing with Gandhi’s peaceful dissolution of the British empire in India. And there’s an episode with Thena where she’s in Greece. I would love to make that show. There are a lot of opportunities. If the audiences allow us, there’s going to be a story to tell with Dane Whitman. There’s going to be a story to tell in the Cosmos with the Eternals confronting Arishem and all the Celestials who are these incredible metaphors for creation. I think there’s a lot of stories in the Eternals universe.

Ryan and Kaz noted that the Eternals prequel series was something they’ve only joked about at this stage, but it’s clear that they’re passionate about those characters and the universe they occupy. “It’s an exciting time to be a storyteller,” Ryan Firpo said. “With Disney+, with movies, there are so many opportunities to tell these stories and so many different formats. It’s a really exciting time to just explore new frontiers in narrative.

The Firpo’s mentioned an Eternals prequel story revolving around Kingo and the writers added that they always envisioned Kumail Nanjiani in the role, but there was a moment when they thought they might lose him to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

[For Kingo, we thought], “This is Kumail Nanjiani. It has to be.” I remember at the time Nate [Moore] was like, “We really love Kumail, but he might be in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. I don’t know if you guys can get him.” Life happened and he found his way back to us. Nobody could have played that role better than Kumail. That was true of almost everyone in this film.

James Gunn took to Twitter to clarify that he had written a cameo role for Nanjiani in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but when Kevin Feige told him they had a main role for him in Eternals, he knew that would be the better fit. Eternals is now playing in theaters, so be sure to check out a review from our own JimmyO right here. You can also let us know what you thought of the film as well.
