Eternals post-credit scene: Chloé Zhao on the big secret cameo

MAJOR SPOILERS for Eternals. Consider yourself warned. Eternals is now playing in theaters and as expected, it’s full of major revelations to do with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As is tradition, Eternals also includes a couple of post-credit scenes and one of them includes a secret cameo that may have slipped your notice. We’ll get into that below, but remember… spoilers!

While much of the press has been focused on the first of the two Eternals post-credit scenes, it’s the second that we’ll be talking about today. The scene finds Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) opening an ancient family chest that contains the Ebony Blade. As he prepares himself to touch it, he’s interrupted by the voice of someone from off-camera who says, “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?” The identity of this individual isn’t revealed in the film, but Eternals director Chloé Zhao revealed to Fandom that the voice belongs to none other than… Blade (Mahershala Ali). Holy shit.

That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself. Blade, Blade, Blade, yeah!

Mahershala Ali was first announced as Blade at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, and I think most of us have been quite excited to see the Daywalker make his debut in the MCU. Appearing in the Eternals post-credit scene isn’t exactly where I imagined Blade first appearing, but I’ll take it! Although Kit Harington didn’t have any idea what was happening when he was filming it, Zhao recently informed him of the true nature of the scene. “It’s really cool,” Harington said. “[Chloé] texted me about that a couple of weeks ago and it sort of blew my mind. I didn’t know that that would be the case, so it’s pretty exciting for me.

The Blade movie will be directed by Bassam Tariq from a script by Stacy Osei-Kuffour, with production expected to begin next summer. With Dane Whitman involved in Blade’s introduction in the Eternals post-credit scene, it’s possible that Kit Harington could be involved with the Blade movie. “I came into this knowing that there would be, hopefully, some cool possibilities for the future and also looking at the character and responding to the character as I saw it on every level, in every platform,” Harington said. “So yeah, this is a great intro into the Marvel world and I’m just very happy that this movie is the one that I got to do it in.” Eternals is now playing in theaters, so be sure to check out a review from our own JimmyO right here.
