"We have watched, unguided; we have helped them progress and seen them accomplish wonders. Throughout the years we have never interfered…until now." This is a line from the recently released teaser trailer of Marvel's Eternals and some fans think this very line is conveniently retconning their absence from the MCU during extreme times of crisis across the films.
The film will mark the first time the group of ancient immortals who protect Earth from supernatural threats has appeared in the MCU but this has left fans confused as to why the Eternals have failed to interfere in many instances where their help was clearly needed. This would include battle in New York featured in The Avengers and, more notably, when Thanos (Josh Brolin) wiped out half of all existence in Avengers: Infinity War with a single snap. I feel like some of their questions about this are in good fun but I definitely sense a bit of legit confusion in some of these tweets. You can check out some of the reactions below!
one thing that bothers me about the Eternals "throughout the years we have never interfered until now"
me: so when half of the galaxy turn to space dust by a snap of a finger you guys were just like "this is fine"???

haha youtubers trolling marvel with the "we have never interfered, until now" eternals trailer phrase, meaning whatever happens in the movie has to be bigger than wiping half the universe for them to interfere.

They dragging them because The Eternals said "we don't interfere until now" and everybody wanna know where were they during Thanos. This is so funny lol

"We're the Eternals. We don't interfere." *Thanos happens* "Wow, on second thought, maybe we have a responsibility." *movie happens*

Eternals: "We don't interfere."
Also Eternals: "Let's interfere with humanity except for everything that matters."

Eternals: "We guide humanity and don't interfere."
Humanity has slavery, genocide, famine, and war along with several alien invasions.
Eternals: "This is fine."

The Eternals trailer looks cool I guess (I don't know anything about them) , but mostly I'm dying to know what makes them "interfere" if they just hung back and observed while half of sentient life in the universe was wiped out

Marvels Eternals:
We ran out of ideas so let’s push in these hero’s who have been here the whole entire time but refused to interfere with cosmic level threats. But don’t worry we’ll come out for some generic bad guy!I hope that’s not the case but most likely is.

Social media is known for jumping in on "issues" like this so I'm not surprised that the absence of the Eternals during these great threats is being put into question. The same thing happened when Avengers: Endgame made up very convenient reasons for Captain Marvel to be absent most of the film because she likely could've taken down Thanos all on her own. Sometimes we just have to deal with these narrative blemishes and enjoy the ride for what it is.
Directed by Nomadland Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, Eternals will focus on a species of immortal aliens from a distant planet who arrived on Earth thousands of years ago and have been protecting humans since the dawn of time. The Eternals were created by Celestials, a race of powerful extraterrestrial beings who have secretly lived on Earth for over 7000 years. In order to protect Earth, The Eternals must reunite to protect humanity from their evil counterparts. The film stars Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Salma Hayek, Kit Harrington, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ma Dong-Seok, and Brian Tyree Henry.
Why do YOU believe the Eternals haven't "interfered…until now?" Marvel's Eternals hits screens on November 5, 2021.
