Last week we shared the news that THE TAKING OF DEBORAH LOGAN and INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY director Adam Robitel already has a lot of cool ideas for a sequel to ESCAPE ROOM and "would love to do one if it makes financial sense. And today it looks like another entry might be a strong possibility as the movie scored a solid $18 million at the box office this past weekend.
The movie debuted in second place and performed well ahead of industry expectations. In fact, this past weekend alone, the movie doubled its reported, $9 million budget. On top of all of that, opening weekend audiences gave the film a "B" CinemaScore, with demographics reporting that the audience was split 50/50 male-to-female with 53% of the overall crowd coming in aged 25 years or older. Looking ahead, Box Office Mojo expects the PG-13 thriller to top $40-45 million for its domestic run. Not bad!
I haven't had the chance to see the film yet, but our own Jimmy O gave the film a 7/10 rating saying the movie "may not reinvent the wheel or shock audiences with any major revelation, but it certainly manages to entertain." Sounds good to me!
The story follows
six strangers who find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and must use their wits to survive.
The cast includes Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Taylor Russell, Tyler Labine, Jay Ellis, and Nik Dodani. Neal H. Moritz (I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, URBAN LEGEND) and Ori Marmur (JACK THE GIANT SLAYER, BATTLE LOS ANGELES) produce the film. ESCAPE ROOM is now playing at a theater near you.
