Made on a budget of $9 million, director Adam Robitel's 2019 horror-thriller Escape Room (watch it HERE) earned more than $155 million at the global box office. So it makes sense that distributor Sony/Screen Gems sees Escape Room 2 as an important release, even though the sequel – which was filmed in the fall of 2019 – is still considered a "microbudget" project. Escape Room 2 has moved all over the release schedule while Sony/Screen Gems tried to find just the right date for it… and now they have decided to skip 2021 entirely.
Escape Room 2 is scheduled to reach theatres on January 7, 2022.
This is the fourth release date for the film. It was originally supposed to come out on April 17, 2020, then got pushed to August 24, 2020, and then moved back to December 30, 2020. Interestingly, most of those delays happened before many other movies started being delayed due to the pandemic. The first Escape Room was also released in January, so I'm surprised it took this many tries for Sony/Screen Gems to decide to release the sequel in January as well.
Robitel returned to the helm for Escape Room 2, this time working from a screenplay by Will Honley, Maria Melnik, and Daniel Tuch. Honley also earned story credit with Christine Lavaf and Fritz Bohm.
Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Indya Moore, Holland Roden, Isabelle Fuhrman, Carlito Olivero, Thomas Cocquerel, and James Frain star in the sequel, which doesn't have an official synopsis just yet.
Written by Bragi Schut and Maria Melnik, the first Escape Room started when
an intriguing invitation brings six strangers together. Initially, they think they have gathered for a highly immersive escape room, but they soon make the sickening discovery that they are pawns in a sadistic game of life and death. Together, they move from one terrifying scenario to the next as they find clues and solve puzzles. But the players soon learn that exposing their darkest secrets may hold the key to survive.
Escape Room 2 was produced by Neal H. Moritz.
The film already has company on its January 7, 2022 date; 20th Century Studios has an untitled movie scheduled to reach theatres that same day.
