You know that little thumbs-up symbol you text your friends, or the piece of poo you put into a tweet about anything regarding burritos? Yeah, those are getting a movie. Why? Because. It even has the voice talent of T.J. Miller (DEADPOOL) behind it, and is set for release next year. Yes…they are coming.
If you still think this sounds like a practical joke, then Sony has a little surprise for you in the form of more casting and an image of the movie featuring the lead characters (below). Sony has announced that Late Late Show host James Corden and Broad City star Ilana Glazer will lend voices to the movie along with Miller. As well, Sony has released a synopsis for the film:
“EMOJIMOVIE: EXPRESS YOURSELF unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone's user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression – except for Gene (T.J. Miller), an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 (James Corden) and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak (Ilana Glazer). Together, they embark on an epic "app-venture" through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it's deleted forever.”
Crorden and Glazer will be playing a hand emoji and computer programmer emoji (fit with the rebel/hacker look) respectively, and director Anthony Leondis spoke about why these two talents are perfect for the roles:
"Hi-5 is a high-five emoji who is a highly motivated, and highly dramatic, hand on a mission (sorry), and the brilliantly versatile, ebullient and always lovable James Corden fits this part like a glove (sorry again). For the rebel 'break all the codes' computer programmer emoji Jailbreak, Ilana Glazer is the kind of singularly free-spirited, fearless and funny actress to make girls really feel the empowered 'nobody's gonna keep me in a cage' attitude this character exudes. And, of course, T.J. Miller has proven himself to be one of the most genuinely inventive comedic actors around, uniquely capable of connecting and who can convey just about any expression-and often does!"
Well, at least someone is excited for this movie. I mean, I won’t judge the movie as a whole until I see it, but something tells me the studio is really reaching with this one. Maybe it has something to do with the fact this is literally a movie about symbols you randomly, uncontrollably, possibly drunkenly insert into a text about tacos at three in the morning. Perhaps the movie will have a charm and creativity to it like LEGO MOVIE, but I just can’t get excited enough about this idea to care if it does. Miller, Corden and Glazer are all amazing talents so I’m sure they’ll do a bang up job, but all I care about is who is voicing the shit emoji. Please, let it be Donald Trump.
EMOJIMOVIE: EXPRESS YOURSELF is coming whether you like it or not on August 11, 2017.
