The biggest night of the year for television was held last night, with the industry and viewers saying farewell to shows like GAME OF THRONES, VEEP, FLEABAG and more. Plenty of fantastic shows were nominated for major awards last night, with the Television Academy spreading the love and offering up a few surprises along the way…one of them being lots of welcome love for Amazon's FLEABAG.
Breaking down some of the winners and losers, the ceremony bid farewell to plenty of other shows last night, like non-nominees GOTHAM and THE BIG BANG THEORY, but all eyes were on shows like GOT and VEEP. For the former, many predicted it would clean house, which may have been a bit too lofty. The final season of the massive show expectedly won trophies for Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor (Peter Dinklage) but lost out on Best Writing, Best Supporting Actress (four nominees), and Best Directing, the latter of which being the biggest upset with Jason Bateman winning for OZARK, that one show on Netflix you've been meaning to watch. On the bit more surprising side, the final season of VEEP didn't win a single prize last night, including for Comedy Series and actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who had won all the years previous.

However, the show did have some hefty competition in the comedy category, with shows like MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL, BARRY and the second and final season of FLEABAG winning trophies. The latter truly cleaned up, with star Phoebe Waller-Bridge winning for Lead Actress and Writing, and earning wins for Directing and Comedy Series.
The Academy also gave the gold to limited series to HBO's CHERNOBYL, which won awards for Writing, Directing and Limited Series, while WHEN THEY SEE US' Jharrel Jerome pulling out a rousing win in Lead Actor for his show-stopping work in the series. Also, LAST WEEK TONIGHT WITH JON OLIVER is filling the shoes of THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART by continuing its domination in the Variety categories, with no chance for losing seeming to be in sight.
