Last night’s 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards actually pulled off a feat for award shows that has escaped most of them in recent airings. The ratings actually improved from last year’s all-time low.
The Emmy Awards, which ran over three hours, snagged 7.4 million viewers last night, according to Nielsen. This means the ceremony was up about 16% from last year when Jimmy Kimmel hosted the show on ABC. Now, the show is still down 34% from the last time the ceremony was on CBS back in 2017 but considering the downward trend for most award shows, this has to be considered a win.
The ratings from last night are just for the live numbers. No out-of-home or Paramount+ streaming data has been released as of this writing but “Deadline” is reporting that the streaming figures so far appear to be strong. The Emmys were also against Sunday Night Football, which featured a game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Kansas City Chiefs. The game pulled in 16.1 million viewers to win the night and the fact that the Emmys weren’t completely destroyed by the game has to also be viewed as a win for CBS.
I think some viewers were more interested in the shows that were nominated over previous years and wanted to see if they would actually win. A fan favorite like Ted Lasso pulled in significant wins and The Crown, which is a massive hit for Netflix, also dominated in all of its categories. There were also fewer politics in last night’s show and it was really more about fun and celebrating television. As it should be.
