Emma Stone has been making the promotional rounds for her new Disney film, Cruella, and that has left her open to addressing some very persistent Spider-Man rumors. Ever since it was reported that Jamie Foxx is reprising his role as Electro in the new Spidey sequel, Spider-Man: No Way Home, it has open the floodgates of rumors about other possible returns because many fans think we're getting a multiverse storyline in the third MCU Spider-Man film. The rumors gained more traction when Alfred Molina was officially announced to reprise his role as Doctor Octopus from 2004's Spider-Man 2 and that made the blogs go crazy about returns for former Spider-Man actors, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, as well as his past loves, Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone. The latter played Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel and, being fully aware of the rumors that are going around, Stone has decided to address the matter.
Stone was speaking with MTV News while promoting Cruella and she was asked about the matter straightforward. Stone is well aware of the rumors that are going around but with a brief response, she says she isn't involved in the Marvel Studios project:
"I have heard those rumors. I don't know if I'm supposed to say anything, but I'm not [involved]. I'm not. I don't know what you're supposed to respond as an alumnus (laughs)."
Stone's comments are pretty much in line with what Andrew Garfield said about not being involved. He said he hasn't received a call and went a bit overboard saying that there was no truth to the rumors. A lot of fans still think Garfield is lying to keep a big Marvel secret but only time will tell if he was just pulling our chain.
It should be noted that Stone's fate as Gwen Stacy was pretty final at the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as she was killed on screen. Dunst's Mary Jane is very much alive while the final outcomes for Electro and Doc Ock were merely implied. Having Emma Stone return could be more problematic given how her character wrapped up but this is a comic book movie so anything could happen.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is scheduled for release on December 17, 2021, (which is an awesome birthday present for me) and we do know that Tom Holland is back as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and he'll officially be joined by Zendaya, Maria Tomei, Jamie Foxx, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alfred Molina, Jacob Batalon, and J.B. Smoove. Anything else is just pure speculation at this point.
