Emily VanCamp leaving The Resident ahead of season five

This news has caught me completely off guard but Emily VanCamp, who has been the female lead on Fox’s The Resident for its first four seasons, has decided to leave the series ahead of its upcoming fifth season.

According to “Deadline“, VanCamp asked to be released from the show at the end of last season. There was an effort to bring her back in Season 5 and this was something she was reportedly open to but it ultimately didn’t work out. The storyline of her character, Nicolette ‘Nic’ Nevin, is expected to be wrapped up early into Season 5.

VanCamp revealed last week that she and her husband, former Revenge co-star Josh Bowman, had welcomed their first child, Iris. It isn’t known if this played into her decision to leave the show but it’s very possible just wants to focus on being a first-time mother. The scenario also mirrors the story of her Resident character in certain aspects. In the Season 4 finale, Nic gave birth to her and Conrad’s (Matt Czuchry) first child, a girl, Georgiana Grace Hawkins, named after both of their late mothers. The successful delivery followed a stressful pregnancy during which Nic, a nurse practitioner, had been stabbed by a man the hospital had turned away because it was closed.

Losing VanCamp on the hit medical drama is going to be a tough blow to the fans. As mentioned before, the actress is the female lead and her story with Matt Czuchry’s Conrad Hawkins has been central to the show over its first four seasons. It will be interesting to see how the show will adjust to her departure moving forward.

Emily VanCamp is no stranger to television. The actress has had starring roles on Everwood, Brothers & Sisters, and Revenge. VanCamp is also known for playing Sharon Carter/Agent 13 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most recently appearing as the character on Disney+’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
