Emily the movie

The Hollywood Reporter announced this morning that the Dark Horse Comic EMILY THE STRANGE is being set up for a film adaptation through Dark Horse Entertainment and possibly Universal Pictures.

EMILY THE STRANGE is a gothic character who had a series of graphic novels starting back in the early-mid 90s, who has ‘adventures’ with her four mysterious cats.

To tell you the truth, I have no idea what the whole deal is with EMILY THE STRANGE. But it appears to be quite popular, as I recall seeing her mug on half a dozen T-shirts, posters, lunch pails, bumper stickers, and the like everytime I’ve gone into Hot Topic, so there must be quite th following, no?

No word on the details of the adaptation, other than it will be an ‘origins’ story of Emily and her cats, along with new characters not yet seen in the comic series (Earwig, Umlaut, McFreeley, and Officer Summers). Producers Mike Richardson (who was also behind 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, HELLBOY, and HBII: THE GOLDEN ARMY) and comic creator Rob Reger are currently out looking for a director to helm the film, a director who really ‘gets’ the character. Should be interesting to see who ends up landing the gig.

Coinciding with the film is the ‘young adult novel’ of EMILY THE STRANGE, which is looking to hit sometime next year. Who knew EMILY would be the next big thing? Stick around for more on this adaptation as we hear it!
