Aubrey Plaza is joining the cast of Emily the Criminal as the film’s diabolical lead (via Deadline). She’ll be joined by Gina Gershon and Megalyn Echikunwoke, who is also set to star. In addition to her starring role, Plaza will also produce.
The project from Low Spark Films is being written and directed by John Patton Ford. The film tells the story of Emily (Plaza), who is down on her luck and saddled with debt. In time, she gets involved in a credit card scam that pulls her into the criminal underworld of Los Angeles, ultimately leading to deadly consequences.
Tyler Davidson and Drew Sykes will produce alongside Plaza, with Dexter Braff, Kevin Flanigan, Angus Wall, Kent Kubena, Lowell Shapiro, and Mike Dill serving as Executive Producers. The project recently wrapped production in Los Angeles, which means that it won’t be long before Emily sticks it to creditors and their evil, debt-saddling ilk.
Plaza recently completed her work on an untitled Guy Ritchie film starring Jason Statham. In the film, an agent is recruited by a global intelligence alliance to track down and stop the sale of a deadly weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order. Plaza is also set to star alongside Allison Brie, Molly Shannon, Debby Ryan, Fred Armisen, and Lil Rey Howley in Spin Me Round. The comedy directed and co-written by Jeff Baena centers on a woman who wins an all-expenses trip to a company’s gorgeous “institute” outside of Florence.
On the animated front, Plaza is set to lend her voice to The Ark and the Aardvark. In the film, an aardvark named Gilbert lands the job of shepherding the animals onto Noah’s Ark. Directed by John Stevenson, the film also features Miles Teller, Jenny Slate, Stephen Merchant, Rob Riggle, and Craig Robinson as members of the voice cast. Emily the Criminal has yet to receive a release date. We’ll be sure to let you know as soon as there are any updates.
