When something bad happens to a psychic, there is always someone who questions how a psychic couldn't have seen their own misfortune coming down the line. Although director Gail Harvey's upcoming suspense thriller NEVER SAW IT COMING will feature a psychic character who gets herself into trouble, it doesn't sound like anyone's going to be wondering how she couldn't have predicted it – there is some indication that we're not supposed to believe this psychic really has any psychic ability.
NEVER SAW IT COMING is about
Keisha Ceylon, an opportunistic psychic who finds herself too much in the middle of a murder case in a small town and must find a way out unscathed.
The film is based on a 2013 novel by Lindwood Barclay, and the description of the book is where Keisha's abilities (and methods) are questioned:
Keisha Ceylon is a psychic. At least, that's what she passes herself off as. The truth is, Keisha's real powers have more to do with separating troubled families from their money than actually seeing into the netherworld. Keisha watches the news for stories of missing family members. She gives it a few days, then moves in, tells these families she's had a vision, that she may have some clue to where these missing people are. And by the way, she charges for this service, and likes to see the money up front.Keisha's latest mark is a man whose wife disappeared a week ago.
Having a thriller center on a fraud who plays on tragedy is a great idea, although it might be tough to care about Keisha when we know she takes advantage of people in the midst of tragedy.
The actress tasked with making Keisha worth following through this story is Emily Hampshire, who TV viewers may know from her roles on Syfy's 12 Monkeys and the Pop comedy Schitt's Creek.
NEVER SAW IT COMING begins filming in Sudbury, Ontario next week.
