Since the release of Doug Liman's big-budget adaptation of Hiroshi Sakurazaka Japanese graphic novel All You Need Is Kill (made into a movie called EDGE OF TOMORROW starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt) Warner Bros. has been trying to make a sequel. Sure the movie didn't blow up the domestic box-office, but worldwide the flick pulled in an impressive $370 million and received a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
So a sequel kind of seems like a given. And today star Emily Blunt let us all know she still hopes EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 happens.
Blunt said:
I think there’s an idea, that he says is great. And he says this guy came in and cracked the case. How the stars will all align for us to be able to do it. I don’t know. I hope they do. I absolutely adored [the first film]. It broke my body in half, but I’d be willing to do it again to work with those boys who I love. So let’s see. Tom and I are going to be 70 before we make another one. It’s going to look a bit weird. We’ll have to do a real flashforward one. We’ll go full ‘Irishman,’ it’ll be the ‘Irishman’ version of ‘Edge of Tomorrow.’ Who knows? I hope, I’m going to talk to Doug about it [at the ‘A Quiet Place: Part II’ premiere].
Are you up for EDGE OF TOMORROW 2? Or is it LIVE DIE REPEAT & REPEAT? MATEKILLREPEAT? 2 EDGE 2 TOMORROW? EDGE OF 2MORROW? I can't even keep track anymore. All the same, are you excited? Let us know below!
The original film began:
When Earth falls under attack from invincible aliens, no military unit in the world is able to beat them. Maj. William Cage (Tom Cruise), an officer who has never seen combat, is assigned to a suicide mission. Killed within moments, Cage finds himself thrown into a time loop, in which he relives the same brutal fight — and his death — over and over again. However, Cage's fighting skills improve with each encore, bringing him and a comrade (Emily Blunt) ever closer to defeating the aliens.
Liman directed the original from a script by Christopher McQuarrie, Jez Butterworth, and John-Henry Butterworth based on All You Need Is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Erwin Stoff, Tom Lassally, Jeffrey Silver, Gregory Jacobs, and Jason Hoffs produced the original which starred Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, and Brendan Gleeson. This sequel is produced by Erwin Stoff, Tom Lassally, and Masi Oka, with Hisashi Sasaki exec producing.
