Emily Blunt says that a new Edge of Tomorrow 2 script is in the works

Thanks to the positive reception as well as the passion of the cast and crew of EDGE OF TOMORROW, a sequel to the sci-fi flick has slowly been taking shape over the past few years despite the film's unexceptional box-office performance. Emily Blunt recently spoke with IndieWire to provide an update on the status of the EDGE OF TOMORROW sequel, which she's heard could be going back to the scripting stage.

Doug Liman has got an awesome idea and he’s excited and they just need to write it. There has been a script, but now I gather there’s another one in the works.

Director Doug Liman implied that there was already a script in place last fall, but earlier this year said that they were back to "working on the script," which could be what Emily Blunt is referring to.

Emily Blunt also revealed that the film could have gone into production last year, but she was about to begin work on MARY POPPINS RETURNS when Tom Cruise came calling. "It’s a lot for all the stars to align for everyone to be free at the same time and available to do it at the same time," Blunt said. "They asked me to do [it] two months before I started ‘Mary Poppins.’ Tom was like, ‘Can you go this autumn?’ and I was like, ‘No, I can’t go, I’m playing Mary Poppins for like a year, dude! I can’t do ‘Edge of Tomorrow.'" By the time MARY POPPINS RETURNS wrapped up, Cruise was busy with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT and Blunt moved on to A QUIET PLACE, but the actress seems hopeful that those stars will align one of these days.

We're still not sure when EDGE OF TOMORROW 2 will come together, but back in January, Doug Liman had said that the sequel "has the possibility of being my next film." I suppose we'll have to stay tuned. Liman has also teased that the film will be a sequel which is also a prequel, and "when you see it, you’ll be like, 'I get exactly what he meant by that.'" Although I'm still not convinced that EDGE OF TOMORROW needs a sequel, Liman has said that we'll get to witness Tom Cruise's character dying over and over again, albeit a little differently this time around.

It’s mostly not on the battlefield, so there’s a whole new arena of fights we’re going to do using a lot of the technology, but also, because it is a prequel, it’s a lot of the precursor stuff. I’m really interested in the details of that … Like batteries, do they run out on these suits? I mean, they must have batteries. Or he gets stuck with the menu in the wrong language, just the reality of that menu stuck in the wrong language when you’re in the middle of a battlefield and aliens are all around you and you gotta get the suit working again, that detail gives you drama and excitement. And humor. In the sequel, I’m creating an environment where I get to have even more of those details.

MARY POPPINS RETURNS will hit theaters on December 25, 2018.
