We heard back in September that Well Go USA had paid $2 million to snatch up the distribution rights to the psychological sci-fi thriller FREAKS just a couple days after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was said then that the company was planning to give the film a 2019 release, and now we know the date they're aiming for: FREAKS is scheduled to reach theatres on August 23rd.
Along with the release date announcement comes a new trailer, which can be seen below.
Written and directed by Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, FREAKS centers on
a girl who discovers a bizarre and threatening new world behind her front door after she escapes from her paranoid father.
That girl is played by Lexy Kolker, and she is joined in the cast by Emile Hirsch as her extremely protective father and Bruce Dern as the ice cream man Hirsch's character says keeps the bodies of dead children in his ice cream truck. Amanda Crew and Grace Park are also in the cast.
FREAKS looks quite interesting to me and word of mouth following the Toronto screening was positive, so I'll be checking it out when it's released.
