If you’re looking for a fun movie that also makes you think, you’ll be doing yourself a favor checking out Emergency, which is now streaming on Prime Video. Emergency is a satirical comedy-thriller and while that might sound odd on paper, the film ends up being a successful mix of laughs and social commentary that couldn’t be any more timely.
Emergency is based on director Carey Williams’ 2018 short film of the same name which was also penned by KD Dávila. They both turn their short into a feature-length film that follows three college students who are preparing for one legendary night. That night is thrown a curveball when they have to weigh the pros and cons of calling the police when faced with a pretty unexpected situation. The three friends, two being African American and one Hispanic, find a Caucasian girl seemingly drunk and passed out in their dorm room and from there it’s a series of whacky, yet seriously unfortunate events.
I had the pleasure of speaking with director Carey Williams and screenwriter KD Dávila and I have to say I loved their energy and enthusiasm about turning their short into a feature-length film. We discussed how their short ultimately became what it is now and what it was like expanding it into a feature release. We also touched on discussions they had with the cast and essentially how lucky they were that everyone really understood the tone of the project.
