Emergency Interviews: Sabrina Carpenter & Maddie Nichols

If you’re looking for a fun movie that also makes you think this weekend, you’ll be doing yourself a favor checking out Emergency, set to debut on Amazon Prime on May 27, 2022. Emergency is a satirical comedy-thriller and while that might sound odd on paper, the film ends up being a successful mix of laughs and social commentary that couldn’t be any more timely.

Emergency is based on director Carey Williams’ 2018 short film of the same name which was also penned by KD Dávila. They both turn their short into a feature-length film that follows three college students who are preparing for one legendary night. That night is thrown a curveball when they have to weigh the pros and cons of calling the police when faced with a pretty unexpected situation. The three friends, two being African American and one Hispanic, find a Caucasian girl seemingly drunk and passed out in their dorm room and from there it’s a series of whacky, yet seriously unfortunate events.

Sabrina Carpenter continues a string of solid film choices by playing Maddie, the older sister of Maddie Nichols’ Emma, the Caucasian girl in question that is found passed out in the dorm room. Sabrina Carpenter has a pretty tough role because on the one hand she’s being a protective sister trying to find her sibling but when she makes assumptions about her sister’s situation based solely on race, she finds herself being a position to address if she is that person that makes assumptions solely on stereotypes. As Emma, Maddie Nichols has to spend most of the movie knocked out in an inebriated state but she shows her commitment to the role and a level of unspoken trust with her co-stars.

During our chat, we discuss the conversations that Carpenter and Nichols had on set about some of the more serious tones of the film and they both put in the work to have a true understanding of the material. I also asked Carpenter about the choices she made as an actress in regards to playing Maddie and I ask Maddie about putting her trust in her male co-stars with who she shares most of her screentime.

Emergency hits Amazon Prime on May 27, 2022.
