Emergency Interviews: RJ Cyler, Donald Elise Watkins, & Sebastian Chacon

If you’re looking for a fun movie that also makes you think this weekend, you’ll be doing yourself a favor checking out Emergency, set to debut on Amazon Prime on May 27, 2022. Emergency is a satirical comedy-thriller and while that might sound odd on paper, the film ends up being a successful mix of laughs and social commentary that couldn’t be any more timely.

Emergency is based on director Carey Williams’ 2018 short film of the same name which was also penned by KD Dávila. They both turn their short into a feature-length film that follows three college students who are preparing for one legendary night. That night is thrown a curveball when they have to weigh the pros and cons of calling the police when faced with a pretty unexpected situation. The three friends, two being African American and one Hispanic, find a Caucasian girl seemingly drunk and passed out in their dorm room and from there it’s a series of whacky, yet seriously unfortunate events.

The three friends are played by RJ Cyler, Donald Elise Watkins, and Sebastian Chacon, and I had the pleasure of speaking with all three to talk a bit about the film and some of its themes. We touch on the chemistry they built as friends working on the movie, if there were any in-depth discussions about the themes of the film with the filmmakers, and what it was like working with some of their other co-stars who they said really did the homework to understand some of the more tough questions regarding race and the assumptions made about people because of it.

Emergency hits Amazon Prime on May 27, 2022.
