If you’re famous enough you’ll eventually get your own movie. That’s just famous people science. In a lot of ways this is great, because making a movie out of a person’s life is the only way some people will get to know who that person really is other than as just a famous name. Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley is one of those icons whose work has stood the test of time – Frankenstein: or, the Modern Prometheus – but whose biography isn’t exactly coming off the tip of anyone’s tongue. Elle Fanning hopes to showcase the real Shelly to the world in MARY SHELLEY, where she is playing the titular character. You can get a first look at the actress in her fancy clothes below, wondering exactly where this overcast caEe from.

The movie, previously under the name A STORM IN THE STARS, tells the story of Shelley (Fanning) and the early years with her beau, romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, during which time she came up with the idea for Frankenstein. The movie will be directed by Haifaa al-Mansour, who made a name for herself with the award-winning movie, WADJDA. The cast includes Douglas Booth (Percy), GAME OF THRONES’ Maisie Williams, Bel Powley, Joanne Froggatt and Tom Sturridge.
Fanning has done some interesting work in bold projects, and I’m anxious to see what she can do with the right material. I think she has yet to give us a big performance but, who knows, maybe MARY SHELLEY will truly showcase her talents as a leading lady. If they’re pretty enough in the production department and don’t get too worn down in the drama these kinds of period pieces have potential to be quite illuminating, so I guess we’ll see. All I know about the movie is there will be no need for sunscreen.
There is no precise release for the movie, but it’s currently being shopped around Berlin Film Festival
