We have been hearing about Eli Roth‘s cannibal horror film THE GREEN INFERNO for quite some time and now we finally get a look at the teaser for the flick due later this year. Roth filmed THE GREEN INFERNO in the jungles of Peru using native tribes as actors, most of whom had never even seen a television or knew what a movie was. Much like the cult classic CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, Roth strove to create a terrifingly realistic horror film, unlike his prior movies like HOSTEL and CABIN FEVER.
THE GREEN INFERNO represents Eli Roth‘s first directorial effort since HOSTEL: PART II in 2007. From the fleeting glimpses in this trailer, the movie looks a lot like the cannibal horror movies that were popular in the 1970s. Some may say that this is just another exploitation movie from a filmmaker who has made a career of that genre. Those folks would be partially correct. Why THE GREEN INFERNO is undoubtedly an exploitation movie, it is not one that we have seen get a wide release in a long time.
Idealistic Justine (Lorenza Izzo) joins a group of campus radicals on a mission to disrupt the illegal clear-cutting of a Peruvian jungle, which is endangering the tranquil lives of an isolated Amazonian tribe. Armed with good intentions and the power of their cellphone cameras, the group flies to Peru and seemingly succeeds in their mission. But the activists’ celebration quickly turns to tragedy when their plane crashes in the jungle — and they find themselves on the dinner menu of the very people they were trying to protect.
Think of THE GREEN INFERNO what you will, but this will definitely be the type of movie that gains a cult following from rabid horror fans and aficionados of grindhouse cinema. Heck, just the name Eli Roth may garner this movie a big opening weekend.
THE GREEN INFERNO starring Daryl Sabara, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Aaron Burns, Magda Apanowicz, and Sky Ferreria premieres in theaters on September 5, 2014.
