Eli Roth presents Clownpocalypse film, video game, series, etc.

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

I'm still sitting over here waiting for Eli Roth to get around to making a simple little slasher called THANKSGIVING, but he's busy focusing on a project with a much larger scope than that. It has been announced that Roth and 3BlackDot are working together on a "360-degree horror project" called CLOWNPOCALYPSE.

Details on the story CLOWNPOCALYPSE is going to be telling are being kept under wraps, but we can probably safely assume that it has something to do with an apocalyptic event involving clowns. Philip Gelatt is writing the screenplay for a CLOWNPOCALYPSE film, but a movie isn't all we're going out of this property. It's called a "360-degree horror project" because 3BlackDot is also developing and financing a video game that is far into production.

A live event experience and merchandise are also being planned, and there's supposed to be a "short-form series" as well.

The intent here is to have audiences engage in the world of Clownpocalypse through the film, a multi-player console game with an AR driven mobile component, and a live event with supporting online content and merchandise in a complete multi-platform release schedule.

Roth has been plotting out this project with producer James Frey "for some time". Roth had this to say about CLOWNPOCALYPSE:

I’ve had an amazing time collaborating with James Frey and the incredible team at 3BlackDot. From concept to art to the game play, every step of the way, no idea has been too crazy, and they’ve executed it at the highest level. For years I’ve had people tell me ‘You can’t do that in a game, it’s too insane’ and I finally found partners who said, ‘Let’s take this a step further.’ It feels like we’re making a game, movie and live experience with no parental supervision or studio to tell us to tone it down, and that’s the only way to create something spectacular and memorable. This will be a big, fun, scary event for gamers, movie fans, and people who love live events. The Clownpocalypse is coming. Get ready."

The CLOWNPOCALYPSE film is expected to go into production later this year, so the search is on for a director. Roth and Frey will be producing the film with Mitchell Smith, Zennen Clifton, and 3BlackDot President Reginald Cash.

Cash says,

As a studio, we’re committed to developing and financing the most innovative content experiences. We are thrilled to continue to work with great visionaries and storytellers such as Eli and Philip in creating immersive worlds that traverse film, games, and live events. Audiences are in for a real surprise."

The title CLOWNPOCALYPSE doesn't really get me hyped, but everyone working behind the scenes seems to be incredibly enthusiastic about the concept. I look forward to seeing how this will all turn out.

This isn't the first bit of clown horror Roth has put his name on; he also produced the movie CLOWN.
