There's only 50 days left until Disney and Jon Favreau's live-action version of THE LION KING comes roaring into theaters, and today the House of Mouse is celebrating this exciting milestone with eleven new character posters for the highly-anticipated film.
Directed by Favreau from a screenplay penned by Jeff Nathanson, THE LION KING will take audience members on a journey to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.
As of this moment, THE LION KING is expected to earn about $180 million to $230 million (via Box Office Pro) during the African adventure's opening weekend. As my co-worker Matt Rooney detailed just a few days ago, "even if the film opens at the lowest of those projections, or even less than, it would still place THE LION KING above the opening of Disney’s biggest remake, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST ($174 million) and even in the top 10 openings ever above CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR ($179 million) and INCREDIBLES 2 ($182 million). Of course, should it hit the higher end of things it would be cracking the top 5, pouncing over the likes of Marvel hits BLACK PANTHER and THE AVENGERS ($201 million, $207 million) and STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI ($220 million) – all movies that went on to make over $600 million domestically."
And now, the moment you've all been clicking for …
Staying true to the classic story, director Jon Favreau utilizes pioneering filmmaking techniques to bring the iconic characters to the big screen in a whole new way. Featuring the voices of Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon, the film also stars John Kani, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba, Eric André, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, and Shahadi Wright Joseph.
Disney's THE LION KING will proudly pad into theaters on July 19, 2019.
