With the Oscars bringing awards season to a close this weekend there was still one other organization that needed bestow their awards on this year’s nominees – the Writer’s Guild of America. A generally great precursor to the screenplay winners at the Oscars, this year’s winners have really shaken things up with the major prizes going to Bo Burnham’s authentic, hilarious take on adolescence, EIGHTH GRADE for best original screenplay, while Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty won best adapted screenplay for their insightful and witty Lee Israel biopic, CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?

When it comes to the Oscars this messes with the current predictions from many predominant experts, especially in the Original Screenplay category. EIGHTH GRADE winning here makes the race at the Oscars complicated as Burnham’s script wasn’t even nominated at the big show, losing a spot to FIRST REFORMED, ROMA, VICE, GREEN BOOK and THE FAVOURITE – the latter two considered favorites to win. While THE FAVOURITE wasn’t nominated due to WGA regulations, ROMA or GREEN BOOK were top picks to win here, which would’ve played into a clearer winner at the Oscars. With GRADE’s win, it’s anyone’s game.
CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? is nominated for an Oscar, however, which means it now has a stronger shot at winning the gold come Sunday. Still, nominees BLACKKKLANSMAN and IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK have been the heavy favorites, which means that this race may also hold surprises at the end. CYEFM beat out those last two at the WGA, along with BLACK PANTHER and A STAR IS BORN, and all but PANTHER are nominated at the Oscars, with THE BALLAD OF BUSTER SCRUGGS taking its place.
But it’s not all Oscar nominees that the WGA awarded last night, with prizes being bestowed on the TV world as well. Shows like BARRY, THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL and CASTLE ROCK won big last night, as did last year’s hit video game – GOD OF WAR.
