Edgar Wright starts filming on Last Night in Soho as set images drop

T’was only two years ago that Edgar Wright debuted his last movie, BABY DRIVER, but that is too long a time to wait and hear he’s at last started work on his newest movie, LAST NIGHT IN SOHO. Wright officially started production on the movie this week, and he’s taken to social media to share some set photos and a glimpse at the first logo for the upcoming psychological thriller.

Based on a script from Wright and Krysty Wilson-Cairns – who worked on PENNY DREADFUL and wrote the new war drama being directed by Sam Mendes, 1917 – Wright described SOHO to Empire back in January as being inspired by movies like Nicolas Roeg’s DON’T LOOK NOW and Roman Polanski’s REPULSION.

“I realised I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years. With Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in.”

Soon after, Wright found his star in Anya Taylor-Joy (SPLIT, THE WITCH), with Matt Smith (DOCTOR WHO) and Thomasin McKenzie (LEAVE NO TRACE) joining the cast as well. There is currently no release date yet, but with filming happening now this could be something to hit theaters sometime next year, with Focus Features perhaps hoping it can break out at the box office like BABY DRIVER.

Wright’s last movie was a departure from his previous work like HOT FUZZ, SHAUN OF THE DEAD and SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, which had heavy comedic vibes that put the spin on well-worn genres. DRIVER also played with the heist movie format, but pumped the breaks a bit on the comedy and leaned in more to the crime-thriller and romance angles. With LAST NIGHT IN SOHO he looks to continue to lean into more serious territory with this psychological thriller, enlisting OLDBOY and IT cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon. Of course he's going to nail it; he always nails it.
