Edgar Wright fans everywhere were expecting BABY DRIVER to be another zany, hilarious outing from the filmmaker, but by the end of its wildly successful run, the entire world was swept up in its awesomeness. Making $226 million worldwide, the movie became a surprise smash, and like any director of a hit like this, Wright has been asked about doing some sort of follow-up. Like a Christmas dream come true, Wright is now on the record saying those gears to make one are already in motion.
While talking with EW about the success of BABY DRIVER (which was just named one of the top 10 movies of the year by National Board of Review), the piece concludes with Wright talking about how he was approached about doing a follow-up to the movie, and that he intends to write the second film:
Those talks are already in the works. The deal is being hammered out as we speak. So, hopefully, I’m going to at least write a second one. I’ve definitely got lots of ideas. Whether it’s the next movie, I don’t know. I’m just working that out at the moment, actually.
Wright hasn't made a direct sequel to any of his movies before, with the closest he’s come being the Cornetto Trilogy, a series of three movies starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (SHAUN OF THE DEAD, HOT FUZZ and THE WORLD’S END). He seems to like to pursue new projects all the time, and that may be the case with whatever his next movie is, which he would like to have out in 2019:
I have a couple of things that I’ve been developing, and also a couple of new ideas that I had, and all the nice things that I’ve been offered since [the release of Baby Driver]. I would like to get back in the saddle very shortly, because — slightly beyond my control — but there were four years between The World’s End and Baby Driver. I don’t want it to be that long again. I would love to have a film out in the next two years.
BABY DRIVER is Wright’s best-reviewed movie, as well as his highest-grossing one by a mile, so he’s sort of in uncharted territory when it comes to making a direct sequel to one of his movies. I don’t know if we will get it in the next two years, as it took Wright year’s of writing and prep to get this thing ready, so perhaps he’ll want to slow things down a bit and do something else, chipping away at a BABY DRIVER 2 in between. Either way, I’m down for more sick driving to even sicker beats, and hopefully, Wright has some killer ideas for the sequel to go along with the killer tracks.
BABY DRIVER is on Blu-ray now!
