Edgar Wright says Last Night in Soho is very different from his other films

With SHAUN OF THE DEAD, HOT FUZZ, SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, THE WORLD'S END, and more, we've come to know and appreciate Edgar Wright's distinctive style and comedic timing, but it seems that the director's next film will be an entirely different beast. LAST NIGHT IN SOHO is said to be a psychological thriller set in London which Wright says has been influenced by both Nicolas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW and Roman Polanski's REPULSION, and while speaking with Empire, Wright said that the upcoming film will feel very different when compared to his previous work.

It will feel very different to my other films. But I’ve always liked films which have a slow burn into something else, and a lot of my movies have that feeling. Last Night starts in a more psychological realm and then starts to get increasingly intense as it goes along. And I always like to gravitate towards making a film in genres I miss, and there’s a certain type of psychological horror film that you got more in the ‘60s and ‘70s, that have something of an operatic nature. I’m using that kind of visual grammar.

Much of LAST NIGHT IN SOHO is being kept under wraps, it will center on three characters: Eloise (Thomasin McKenzie), an aspiring fashion designer, Sandy (Anya Taylor-Joy), a rising singer, and the dapper Jack (Matt Smith). Speaking of the latter two characters, Empire has an exclusive image of the pair which you can check out below.

Anya Taylor-Joy, Thomasin McKenzie, and Matt Smith, LAST NIGHT IN SOHO also stars Michael Ajao (ATTACK THE BLOCK), Synnøve Karlsen (Medici), Diana Rigg (Game of Thrones), Terence Stamp (MURDER MYSTERY), and Rita Tushingham (BEING JULIA). "I realised I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years," Wright said in a statement when the project was announced. "With Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in."

LAST NIGHT IN SOHO will hit theaters on April 23, 2021.
