Edgar Wright: Last Night in Soho gets more intense as it goes along

We have to wait until next April before we'll have the chance to see Edgar Wright's new film LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, but it sounds like we're in for something special when the film does make its way out into the world. This is the SHAUN OF THE DEAD director's first shot at making a "straight-up psychological horror thriller", and he discussed the approach he took to it during a recent interview with Empire.

Confirming that "it will feel very different to my other films" (which also includes HOT FUZZ, THE WORLD'S END, SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, and BABY DRIVER), Wright said, 

I've always liked films which have a slow burn into something else, and a lot of my movies have that feeling. (LAST NIGHT IN SOHO) starts in a more psychological realm and then starts to get increasingly intense as it goes along. And I always like to gravitate towards making a film in genres I miss, and there's a certain type of psychological horror film that you got more in the '60s and '70s, that have something of an operatic nature. I'm using that kind of visual grammar."

Wright has previously said that DON'T LOOK NOW and REPULSION were sources of inspiration.

Written by Krysty Wilson-Cairns and Wright, LAST NIGHT IN SOHO stars Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy as characters named Eloise and Sandy. Much of the story takes place in 

the London of the Swinging Sixties; a time period with which Eloise is obsessed and, through a mysterious connection with Sandy, gets to experience.

Matt Smith, Michael Ajao, Synnøve Karlsen, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, and Rita Tushingham are also in the cast.

Wright produced the film with Nira Park and Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.

Originally scheduled to reach theatres in September of this year, LAST NIGHT IN SOHO is now heading toward an April 23, 2021 release.
