Despite what dissenting hipsters or right-wing conspiracy theorists may say, this is a great time to be alive. Virtual reality is a thing, our presidential election resembles a sitcom, and Eddie Murphy is taking back the spotlight. Okay, he may not have a bevy of premium roles on the conveyer belt, but the man is obviously more focused, and has even contemplated a return the stand-up. However, you aren’t a Hollywood big-wig until you’ve taken on some kind of role in a major superhero movie. As far as I’m concerned, Chadwick Boseman is a bigger star than Tom Cruise.
So during an interview with Mashable, Eddie Murphy was asked if he would ever do a superhero movie, and the answer was very…Eddie Murphy:
“I’m kind of long in the tooth to fly in in a cape now, so I’d have to be like the voice of reason or somebody. “Don’t do that, super-fellow! Or we need such-and-such.” I would do a superhero movie if it was funny and we were making fun of superhero movies and I figured out how to do something funny. But even I don’t buy me flying in with a cape on and you know, fucking everybody up, having lasers shoot out. See this? Doesn’t this look like bullshit? What would you call this? Who would I be?
“…If you seen a poster like this on the street, and lasers are shooting out my fingers and I had a cape on. You would go, "get the fuck out of here."
Nowadays when people in the business talk about superhero movies they either are clamoring to be given the chance to be in one, or are dogging the whole industry. Murphy’s response is, frankly, incredibly grounded. He’s not trashing the business, but is also understanding of the fact he probably isn’t the right choice to play a hero of man. Basically, he’ll do a comic book movie if it has a place for him and his comedic talents. I can see that place coming in the form of a KICK-ASS-style flick, or perhaps even something like DEADPOOL. Can you imagine Axel Foley meeting Wade Wilson? Hilarity would ensue, ensue I tell ya!
Eddie Murphy can be seen in MR. CHURCH in theaters now.
