A whole flying saucer full of remakes of classic sci-fi movies (and/or the stories they’re based on) is whirling toward theaters, including WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, and now this one, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL.
Although no director or other info is known at the moment, Fox has apparently slated their remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL for May 9th 2008, claiming a weekend in a busy month already occupied by IRON MAN, INDIANA JONES 4, PRINCE CASPIAN and SPEED RACER.
The profound 1951 science fiction story involves an alien envoy (and his lethal robot) who warns Earthlings to cool it with all the violence or face dire consequences. While deservedly placed on many Top 10 sci-fi film lists, it sadly is probably best known to the current generation as the source of Bruce Campbell’s flubbed ARMY OF DARKNESS failsafe enchantment “Klaatu Barada Nikto”.
