CBS is in the process of rebooting the Kyle Chandler-starring fantasy newspaper drama, Early Edition. The series, which was a late-’90s hit for the network, has received a pilot order with a gender-swapped twist.
The reboot will feature a female lead and it comes from Citadel executive producer Melissa Glenn, DeVon Franklin, and Bob Brush, who developed the original show. Per Deadline, Glenn will also be writing the series and is executive producing alongside producer partner and author Franklin and Brush.
The reboot is set to focus on an ambitious but uncompromising journalist who starts receiving tomorrow’s newspaper today and finds herself in the complicated business of changing the news instead of reporting it. The show will mark CBS’ third in-cycle drama pilot of the 2021-22 development season.
Early Edition aired on CBS from 1996 to 2000 and spanned 90 episodes. The series is set in Chicago, Illinois, and follows the adventures of a man who mysteriously receives each Chicago Sun-Times newspaper the day before it is actually published, and who uses this knowledge to prevent terrible events every day. In addition to Kyle Chandler, the show starred Shanesia Davis-Williams, Fisher Stevens, Kristy Swanson, and Billie Worley.
